Resort History and Theme

Fort Wilderness Resorts and Campsites sign welcomes guests.

Before we dive into all the details, let’s take a step back. How did Fort Wilderness come to be? And what makes it such a unique part of the Disney Resorts family?

The Origins of the Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Let’s rewind to 1971. Disney World had just opened its gates, and right alongside it, Fort Wilderness made its debut. This wasn’t just another resort. It was Disney’s way of bringing the magic to the great outdoors.

The idea was simple but brilliant: combine the fun of camping with that unmistakable Disney touch. Families could pitch a tent, park their RV, and enjoy an adventure unlike anything else. It wasn’t long before Fort Wilderness became a favorite.

Even today, it’s all about nature, campfires, and a little Disney magic. You can roast marshmallows by the fire and still spot Mickey and friends around the resort. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor fun and Disney charm.

Theming at Fort Wilderness Resort

Now, let’s talk about the vibe. Fort Wilderness isn’t your typical campsite. It’s Disney’s tribute to the American frontier, filled with rustic charm and natural beauty.

Imagine cozy log cabins tucked into the woods. Deer wandering past your campsite. It feels like stepping into a storybook wilderness, with Disney’s signature whimsy woven in.

Everything here is designed to make you feel adventurous. Whether you’re hiking the trails or relaxing under the stars, it’s easy to disconnect from the hustle and reconnect with nature—and each other.

If you love the idea of camping with a touch of Disney magic, Fort Wilderness is the perfect spot for you.

Whether you’re an experienced camper with all the gear or just testing the waters, this place has something for everyone. It’s the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and Disney enchantment. Personally, I’m not much of a tent camping girl, but I’d absolutely stay in an RV here!

Ready to find your ideal campsite? Let’s break it down.

Tent or Pop Up Campsite

If traditional camping is your thing, the Tent or Pop-Up Campsites are just right. These sites let you enjoy the great outdoors with a little Disney flair. You’ll get your own slice of wilderness with a sandy pad for setting up your tent or parking a pop-up camper.

Each site includes space for a pop-up camper or camper van and up to two tents. You’ll also have water, electric, and cable TV hookups. And don’t worry—there’s a nearby comfort station for showers and restrooms, so it’s not exactly roughing it.

The campsites have a concrete pad measuring up to 10 feet by 25 feet. They’re perfect for families, friends, or solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature.

Even though I’m more of an RV fan, if I ever tried tent camping, this would be the way to do it—Disney-style, of course!

Preferred Campsite

Want a little extra convenience? The Preferred Campsites have you covered. They include everything the Tent or Pop-Up Campsites offer but add a sewage hook-up for more comfort.

These sites are also in a prime location. You’ll be close to the Marina, dining options, and transportation hubs. It’s a short walk to the trading posts and all the action, making your stay even more enjoyable.

The Preferred Campsites accommodate an RV plus a small tent, with a concrete pad that’s up to 10 feet by 45 feet. It’s the best choice if you want a balance of outdoor adventure and modern convenience.

Premium Campsite

If you like a little extra space or need room for a larger RV, the Premium Campsite is the way to go. These sites are designed with serious campers in mind, offering a concrete pad up to 18 feet by 60 feet. That means plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the outdoors.

You’ll have all the standard hookups: water, electric, cable, and sewer. The paved pads make setup easy and provide a comfortable, accessible space to relax. Plus, these sites are perfectly placed to let you soak in all the natural beauty Fort Wilderness has to offer.

If I were planning to go all out on a camping trip, this would be my pick. It’s the perfect mix of wilderness charm and modern comfort.

RV Rentals

Don’t have your own RV? No worries! You can still enjoy the RV camping experience at Fort Wilderness. Several local companies offer RV rentals that can be delivered and set up for you before you even arrive.

Renting an RV is a great way to enjoy all the comforts of home while being surrounded by Disney magic. It’s also perfect if you’re curious about RV camping but not ready to commit to buying one.

Decorating Your Campsite

One of my favorite things about staying at Fort Wilderness is decorating the campsite. Guests here take it to a whole new level, especially during the holidays. Walking through the campground feels like an adventure all on its own!

From string lights and Disney-themed decor to full-blown holiday displays, creativity is everywhere. It’s a chance to make your space feel personal and magical. My family loves planning our decorations months in advance—it’s all part of the fun!

Just be sure to follow Disney’s safety guidelines to keep things safe and enjoyable for everyone.

This dinner show has been a Disney favorite since the 1970s, and it’s still going strong. It’s fun for all ages and offers a dining experience unlike anything else at Disney. After a busy day, sometimes you just need a drink and a snack. That’s where Crockett’s Tavern shines. This full-service bar offers a great selection of beers, wines, and cocktails, along with tasty bar snacks.

You can kick back in the cozy lounge to recap the day or swing by their walk-up window next to Pioneer Hall if you’re on the move. It’s a relaxed spot to unwind and enjoy the rustic charm of Fort Wilderness.

The Chuck Wagon

For a casual, fun vibe, check out The Chuck Wagon, a themed food truck near the campfire area. It’s a great spot to grab burgers, hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, and cold drinks.

What makes it extra special? The chance to catch Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-a-Long while you snack. It’s like a backyard movie night, but with Disney magic in the mix.

Meadow Snack Bar

Over by the Meadow Swimmin’ Pool, you’ll find the Meadow Snack Bar. It’s the go-to spot for poolside eats, offering snacks, sandwiches, salads, frozen treats, and refreshing drinks.

It’s perfect for lazy pool days when you want to stay close to the water. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite for the kids or treating yourself to a frozen drink, the Meadow Snack Bar makes relaxing by the pool even better.

Seasonal Activities

Fort Wilderness Resort takes the magic up a notch with unique seasonal activities that make your stay even more special.

One of the most beloved traditions here is looping during Halloween and Christmas. Guests go all out, decorating their campsites with elaborate displays. Many even dress up their golf carts with lights, garlands, and festive themes. Looping involves riding around the campgrounds in golf carts to admire the decorations. It’s such a fun way to get into the holiday spirit and connect with fellow guests.

In December, you can also enjoy Holiday Sleigh Rides. These cozy rides take you through the resort’s beautifully decorated grounds, offering a festive and memorable experience for the whole family.
