Before we dive into the details, let’s take a moment to explore how Fort Wilderness came to be and the thematic elements that make it such a special part of the Disney Resort family.

From its beginnings to today, Fort Wilderness celebrates the great outdoors. It honors the adventurous spirit of the American wilderness.

The Origins of the Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Let’s kick things off with a little trip down memory lane to see how Fort Wilderness came to be. Picture this: it’s 1971, Disney World just opened its gates, and right there with it, Fort Wilderness made its debut. But it wasn’t just another resort; it was Disney’s way of saying, “Hey, why not mix the thrill of camping with the magic of Disney?”

Originally dreamed up as a cozy spot for families to pitch a tent or park an RV, Fort Wilderness quickly became the go-to for guests. It offers a different kind of Disney adventure.

It’s all about getting back to nature, roasting marshmallows, and yes, still getting your fill of Mickey and friends. It’s Disney’s way of inviting us to enjoy the great outdoors while still soaking up that magical Disney atmosphere.

Everything here screams adventure. Cozy log cabins are nestled in the woods. Deer might casually stroll by your campsite. It’s not just about looking the part. Fort Wilderness makes you feel like you’re in the heart of the wilderness. And you get all the comforts and fun Disney is known for.

Whether you’re there to relax or chase adventures, it’s the perfect spot. Disconnect from the usual hustle and reconnect with nature. And, of course, reconnect with each other.

It’s the perfect blend of adventure and enchantment, offering a cozy home base for every kind of nature enthusiast. Personally, I’m not much of a tent camping girly, but I’d happily stay in an RV here!

Ready to find your perfect campsite? Let’s dive in!

Tent or Pop Up Campsite

For the traditional camping enthusiasts among us, the Tent or Pop-Up Campsites are your go-to. Nestled in the serene natural beauty of Fort Wilderness, these sites offer a genuine back-to-nature experience with the added magic of Disney. You’ll get a patch of the great outdoors all to yourself, complete with a sandy pad for pitching your tent or parking your pop-up.

Each site comes equipped with room for a pop-up camper or a camper van-type vehicle and up to two tents. They also have water, electric, and cable TV hookups, plus a nearby comfort station to ensure you’re not totally roughing it.

These campsites accommodate equipment on a concrete pad up to 10 feet by 25 feet. They are perfect for families, friends, or solo adventurers looking to soak up the wilderness vibe.

Even though I’m more of an RV kind of girl, if I were to try traditional tent-style camping, it would definitely be roughing it Disney-style!

Seeking a bit more convenience without sacrificing the outdoor feel? The Preferred Campsites might be just what you’re looking for. These spots offer all the amenities of the Tent or Pop-Up Campsites, plus the added benefit of a sewage hook-up.

Along with the standard water and electric hookups, you’ll enjoy sewer service as well, and the sites are nicely paved for added comfort and accessibility. Positioned for optimal enjoyment of Fort Wilderness’s natural beauty, these campsites offer a plush version of wilderness living.
